L' équipe gabonaise ne sera pas au Cameroun.
Le ministre des Sports, Franck Nguema, vient de prendre une décision lourde de conséquence. L’équipe féminine de basket ne participera pas à l’Afrobasket dames 2021. Compétion prévue du 17 au 26 septembre prochain au Cameroun. Cette décision, qui intervient après la débâcle des moins de 21 ans vise d’après le ministre à préserver l’honneur du pays.
D’après Gabonreview, Franck Nguema a, à cet effet, fait parvenir une correspondance à la Fédération gabonaise de basket-ball pour demander à ce qu’elle n’honore pas la présence de l’équipe gabonaise à cette compétition bien que celle-ci soit qualifiée.
« Les résultats catastrophiques et humiliants pour le Gabon, avec des scores défavorables de plus de 100 points d’écart, obtenus au terme de cette compétition tenue au Caire, appellent nécessairement une reconsidération des conditions de participation des équipes nationales du Gabon aux compétitions internationales en cette période marquée par la crise sanitaire de Covid-19 qui a un double impact : sportif puisqu’il n’y a pas de compétitions nationales depuis deux ans d’une part, et économique lourd sur les finances publiques d’autre part», a indiqué le ministre des Sports dans son courrier.
Conséquence, Franck Nguema ne va autoriser que les équipes susceptibles de produire des résultats à prendre part aux compétions internationales. Cette décision découle, d’après lui, de la volonté : « d’éviter des situations semblables qui déshonorent profondément notre pays ».
Si à la Fédération gabonaise de basketball on a pris acte de cette décision, sous cap, certains responsables estiment que le rendement de nos athlètes à l’extérieur est d’abord la conséquence de l’absence de compétions domestiques depuis plus d’un an. « En prenant une telle décision, le ministre ne règle rien. Bien au contraire, il casse le thermomètre pour faire baisser la fièvre », souligne un membre de la Fédération.
