La Gabon Special Zone Economic.
Il y a plus de dix ans difficile d’imaginer qu’une véritable révolution était en marche à la Gabon Special Zone Economic. Ce complexe industriel tentaculaire envahi par la poussière, situé à 30 km du centre de Libreville est devenu en quelques années un modèle de développement durable.
Fort de 12,5 millions d'hectares de couvert forestier sous gestion durable abritant plus de 400 espèces d'arbres, le Gabon est en train de s’imposer comme un modèle de production durable de bois. Le pays peut s’enorgueillir d'avoir limité à moins de 0,1 % son taux de déforestation moyen au cours des trois dernières décennies et compte parmi les rares nations à avoir été qualifiée.
Créée en 2010, elle accueille aujourd'hui près de 90 entreprises du secteur de la transformation du bois qui, ensemble, occupent plus de 6 000 personnes. Les activités vont de la fabrication de meubles sur mesure pour des boutiques d’aménagement intérieur haut de gamme en Europe ou aux Etats-Unis à la production de millions de mètres carrés de placages tropicaux. Une vingtaine d’entreprises scient et stockent chaque mois environ 40 000 mètres cubes de bois sur leur propre complexe de 40 hectares spécialement aménagé à cet effet. En 2021, plus d'un million de mètres cubes de bois y ont été transformés.
Le Gabon est aussi le premier pays du Bassin du Congo à avoir rejoint le système régional de certification panafricaine des forêts (Pan African Forest Certification, PAFC), qui atteste du caractère durable de la gestion forestière et de la traçabilité du bois, de la forêt jusqu'au produit fini. Le bois transformé dans la ZIS de Nkok est tracé depuis son entrée dans le complexe jusqu’à la première unité de transformation à l'aide de TraCer-Nkok, un système de suivi spécialement développé pour se conformer à la législation européenne sur l'importation des produits du bois. Chaque grume pénétrant dans la ZIS est ainsi enregistrée dans une base de données, afin de garantir une traçabilité de bout-en-bout. « Le défi à Nkok est la traçabilité du bois. La ZIS doit être exempte de bois obtenu illégalement », déclare Marc Ona, secrétaire exécutif de Brainforest, une ONG qui fait partie de l'équipe de mise en œuvre de TraCer.
