Fortescue Metals Group est une entreprise minière australienne spécialisée dans l'extraction du minerai de fer. Elle est l'une des plus grandes entreprises d'extraction de minerai de fer au monde. Du coup, quand le 07 avril 2023, cette multinationale signe avec le Gabon un contrat de partenariat pour l’exploitation du fer de Belinga, les populations de la province de l’Ogooué-Ivindo se prennent à rêver du développement d’une localité longtemps plongée dans la pauvreté.
Sauf que 5 mois après, c’est le désenchantement. Alors que la multinationale à travers la société Ivindo Iron SA, une co-entreprise détenue à 80 % par Fortescue Metals, commence l’exploitation de l’important gisement, les populations constatent qu’il n’y a rien en matière d’emplois pour les habitants de la localité. Le samedi 09 juillet dernier, les ressortissants de la province de L'Ogooué-Ivindo, réunis au sein du collectif, « Les insoumis pour la revendication des intérêts des Ogivins », décident d’organiser une conférence de presse à Libreville.
Objectifs : dénoncer les conditions d’exploitation du fer de Belinga. Une exploitation qu'ils jugent désavantageuse pour les populations autochtones. En présence des membres de la société civile, représentée par Geoffroy Foumboula Libeka, le président du collectif « Les insoumis pour la revendication des intérêts des Ogivins » indique : « Nous tenons à dénoncer et à manifester notre opposition face à l'exploitation du Fer de Belinga. Nous savons que le Gabon a signé plusieurs conventions avec la communauté internationale sur le respect des populations autochtones par rapport à l’exploitation des gisements dans les lieux où ces personnes vivent. Mais nous constatons pour le regretter que ces conventions ne sont pas respectées ».
Cette opposition est également due à l'absence de concertation au préalable avec les populations, alors que la multinationale est déjà en activité d'exploitation. « Qu'est-ce qui se cache derrière cette façon de faire ? », s’est interrogé le président du collectif. Non sans dénoncer une sorte de spoliation des populations.
Une position soutenue par la société civile à travers l’intervention de Geoffroy Foumboula. Le porte-parole du Copil Citoyen va s’insurger contre cette façon de faire. Tout en accusant le gouvernement d’être à l’origine de cette situation. Dans son exposé, il va édifier l'opinion sur la responsabilité sociétale des dirigeants du pays parmi lesquels les ministres et les parlementaires. Ces derniers, a-t-il indiqué, sont à l'origine de l'expropriation des populations et du détournement des revenus de l’exploitation minière.
